what is hoby vermont?
HOBY Vermont is local chapter of HOBY International. We are a non-profit focused on building passionate young leaders. Each year, high school sophomores from across the state attend a four day Leadership Seminar as student ambassadors. Throughout the seminar, HOBY VT helps students to discover their leadership potential and refine their skills to enact positive change in their communities. The HOBY curriculum allows students to grow as individuals and develop their own leadership style though hands-on activities, guest speakers, and volunteer service. A critical aspect of our ambassadors' experience is creating a supportive and self-reflective team-building environment. Ambassadors leave empowered, energized, and part of a greater network of HOBY Alumni leaders throughout Vermont.history
Lucia Houlihan brought HOBY to Vermont in 1983. Since then, the seminar has had several sites throughout the state including Bolton Valley Resort, The Cortina Inn in Mendon, Vermont Technical College in Randolph and its current home at Saint Michael's College in Colchester. More than 100 ambassadors take part in the seminar, held Memorial Day Weekend, each year. More than thirty years after Lucia introduced HOBY to Vermont sophomore leaders, the core values of the program have not changed one bit: we aim to motivate the future leaders of Vermont.

HOBY Vermont seeks to be a catalyst for young Vermonters to become effective and compassionate leaders in their local, regional, and global communities.
MISSION
Empower young Vermonters to enact positive social change and develop their own unique voice as we foster self-discovery and instill confidence to lead through an exploration of different ideas, backgrounds, and perspectives.
Through an annual four-day seminar for high school sophomores, HOBY Vermont poses the question, “What can you do to make Vermont a better place?” and then supports them as they find the answer.

Much of the work at HOBY involves young people exploring and identifying their unique leadership skills. Every student is different, and there is no attempt to impart a predefined set of attributes onto HOBY participants. We stress self-knowledge, uniqueness, and authenticity, not conformity. Students learn to mobilize their own unique traits and are exposed to particular leadership principles that they can explore and incorporate in a fashion that is true to their own personality.core values
